The Snowy Range
For the active seniors who want to experience the unique beauty that the Snowy Range of Wyoming has to offer
The
name says it all, talk about big snow on a consistent basis. The
“SNOWIES” get anywhere from 12 to 20
feet of snow every winter. With three hundred fifteen miles of
trails (225 groomed miles) and thousands of acres of open meadows,
it is a snowmobiler’s paradise. Located near the town of Albany,
just 32 miles west of Laramie, WY tucked away in a canyon, Albany
Lodge (www.albanylodge.com) is a lodge and motel with dining room,
bar/grill and café dining not to mention fantastic snowmobiling. The
lodge is located on the trail system in the foothills of majestic
8,000 to 12,000 foot mountain peaks with some of the biggest play
area meadows around.
WOW, talk about great trails. I have snowmobiled since the early seventies and in all my years and different destinations never have I ridden on trails that will begin to compare to the beautifully groomed trails in the Medicine Bow trail system. Not only are they well groomed but the fact of not many other snowmobiles and lots of beautiful scenery make’s for the ultimate snowmobilers experience.
Day One
You arrive at Laramie Airport where waiting transportation takes you to Albany Lodge. After check-in at the motel we get you suited and booted along with snowmobile contracts signed prior to sled assignments. Dinner will be at the lodge’s dining room, after which we have a brief meeting to give you the whys and wherefores of snowmobile operation and safety.
Day Two
Begins with hands-on instructions for the safe operations of the snowmobiles. When everyone is comfortable with how to safely operate the snowmobiles, we leave Albany Lodge for our first day’s ride to the south and the WyColo Lodge, which is located right on the Wyoming and Colorado Border. After lunch, we check out more of the scenic country as we ride our way back to Albany Lodge in time for dinner.
Day Three
We
are on the trail riding north past 10,000’ Spruce Mountain as we
work our way to the awesome Snowy Range with numerous peaks at 10 to
12,000 feet. Soon after Snowy Range Pass (10,847’), we ride east and
stop at the Snowy Range Lodge for a lunch break. With lunch over, we
are back on the trail riding our way back to Albany Lodge and
dinner.
Day Four
The trail takes us northwest towards the
town of Saratoga and the Barrett Ridge area of the Medicine Bow
Routt National Forest. As the trail winds us through this scenic
area, we arrive at the Medicine Bow Lodge for a lunch stop. Soon we
are back exploring more of the beauty of the Medicine Bow Range as
we
head back to Albany Lodge.
Day Five
We ride to the north to experience the
awesome beauty of the other side of the Snowy Range
for a lunch stop, after which we follow the loop trail that will
bring us back to Albany Lodge in time for dinner.
Day Six
Will be your departure day.
Schedule may vary due to weather or trail conditions.
Getting to Albany Lodge
Denver Airport (DIA code) is serviced by United, Delta, Frontier,
Northwest and
US Air, or you have the option of flying into Laramie Regional
Airport where you will be picked up. We also can make arrangements
for a Denver (DIA) pickup for transfer to and from Albany Lodge at a
cost of $600.00 in 2006. With ten people this is a reasonable cost
in comparison to flying to Laramie. To make this work we will need
to coordinate flight times to have arrivals and departures on
similar time schedules. The other option would be flying to DIA on
the day prior to the tour starting date. Transfer time is
approximately two and half hours each way.
